Your First Class

What to Expect

Walking into a new practice can feel daunting. Here is what a typical class looks like so you can arrive with confidence.

01

Arrive & Be Welcomed

Come a few minutes early. You will be greeted by an instructor or senior dancer who will introduce you to the space, explain basic protocols, and answer any questions before class begins.

02

Opening Ceremony

Every class begins with a brief opening — honoring the four directions and centering ourselves in the sacred purpose of the practice.

03

Foundational Instruction

Instructors will guide you through basic footwork, body alignment, and the rhythmic patterns that form the foundation of Danza Azteca. Expect to move, sweat, and laugh — this is joyful, embodied learning.

04

Huehuetl & Movement Together

You will practice moving in relationship with the huehuetl. Learning to listen to and respond to the huehuetl is central to Danza Azteca — the huehuetl leads, the dancer follows.

05

Closing & Community

Classes close with a brief ceremony honoring the practice and the ancestors. After class, students often gather to talk, share food, and build the community bonds that make a calpulli strong.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any prior dance experience?

No experience is necessary. Danza Azteca is a spiritual practice first — we teach everything from the ground up. The most important thing you bring is an open heart and respect for the tradition.

What should I wear to my first class?

Wear comfortable clothing you can move in — athletic wear or loose pants and a t-shirt work well. Avoid open-toed shoes for your first class. As you progress, you will gradually acquire traditional regalia with guidance from the instructors.

Is there a cost to participate?

Our classes are free. We believe cultural education should be accessible to everyone regardless of financial situation. Donations help maintain the space, purchase supplies, and support community events.

Can non-Indigenous people participate?

Yes. We welcome people of all backgrounds who come with sincere hearts and respect for the tradition. Danza Azteca is a living tradition that has always been shared. We ask that all participants approach the practice with humility and a genuine desire to learn.

How long before I can participate in a public ceremony?

This varies by individual. Most students begin participating in community ceremonies within 3–6 months of consistent practice. Your instructors will guide you when you are ready. There is no rush — the tradition teaches patience.

Are ceremonies open to the public?

Many of our ceremonies and community events are open to the public as observers. Some sacred ceremonies are for active dancers only. Check our Events page or contact us for details on upcoming public events.
